In you, O Mother, was preserved undistorted what was made in the image of God; for taking up your cross, you followed Christ and by your deeds you taught us to reject the flesh, for it passes away, but to care for the soul, since it is immortal. Therefore, O Venerable Mary, your spirit rejoices with the Angels.
Life
A 5th-century desert ascetic who lived in repentance in the Jordanian desert for 47 years. Her dramatic conversion from a life of sin to one of extreme asceticism and holiness is commemorated during Great Lent.
