Theotokos

theh-oh-TOH-koss

Greek for 'God-bearer' or 'Birth-giver of God.' The title given to the Virgin Mary by the Third Ecumenical Council at Ephesus in 431 AD. It affirms that Mary gave birth not merely to a human nature but to the divine Person of Jesus Christ.
